Political Communication in the USA Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Political Communication in the USA - Assignment Example The bailouts allowed the state to set more conditions for the corporate sector and as a result America has an extremely state regulated financial sector which endangers the freedom for innovation and creativity (â€Å"The Government Won† 2013). This calls for further reforms in the government regulation because in the current situation, the state’s power is making politicians more influential in the capital market, even in the private sector which is eroding the capitalist freedom that has enabled significant growth over the centuries. The status quo that exaggerates the power of the state should be regulated such that banks are less answerable to the government and by extension politicians. Instead, they should set rules that regulate risk taking and standards for deposits so that companies can have leeway for innovation with the knowledge that in case they mess up, they can expect no protection from the tax payers. The article which was written just before the 2010 elections is titled the â€Å"the first social media election†. It discusses the impact of social media in the UK elections in a backdrop of a system which only five years ago the platform was irrelevant and inapplicable (Arthur, 2010). People watching the lection debates from home were said to be doing it on two screen, the TV and the Facebook or tweeter one. The article implies that there is a real possibility of social media influencing the outcome of elections since citizens may react to the nature of the feedback they access on their respective parties from social media. The labour and Tory parties are trying hard to capitalise on â€Å"social media â€Å"capital which according to many was what got Barack Obama elected in 2008 in the US.

Globalisation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Globalisation - Essay Example At the time, 'USA produced at least half of the world's manufactured goods and held half its reserves' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_sytem ). While the gold standard prevailed, currency exchange rates were more or less fixed, ensuring stability in world trade. Although expounding a liberal free trade and free market philosophy, the USA also is accused of being isolationist. 'America first' is a very powerful slogan. 'The historic insulation of the American economy from the global one stems from the size and physical remoteness of the U.S. market, which relies less on trade than virtually any other in the world. ' even a modest percentage of American GNP constitutes a sizable share of global economic activity. In the early 1950s ' American exports constituted more than a third of industrial exports, yet less than 5 percent of GNP' (http://www.lehigh.edu/'bm05/research/global15.htm ). This kind of hegemony of the US economy began to be eroded in the 1960s and 70s when financial capital in the form of international syndicates of the largest banks of the world undermined the stability of national currencies. There was speculation in currency trading at a time when the currencies of post-war Germany and Japan were becoming stronger vis-a-vis t he American dollar. There was also greater manufacturing successes and enhanced export potential evinced by Japan and the EEC as a trading bloc. Since then trans-national or multinational corporations have also complicated capital and currency movements across the world. A cogent reason for the U.S. planners to advance the concept of a liberal, free market international economic system was that, as the then US Secretary of State Cordell Hull (1933 - 1944) argued the perception that the main cause of two world wars of the 20th century were due to economic protectionism. Nazi Germany's exchange controls in the form of bilateral arrangements and the British Empire's Sterling Area, stood in the way of international free flow of capital and foreign investments. The U.S. indulged in the rhetoric that '' free markets (were associated) with material prosperity, stability, justice, democracy, human rights, international peace and more' (Moon, 1998). However, without government intervention vulnerable groups like unskilled labour find themselves outside the benefits accruing to countries in the wake of such liberalisation (vide The Stolper-Samuelson theory). The 'Heckscher-Ohlin trade theory' also predicts that 'inefficient sectors of the economy will suffer losses. ... As American supremacy ' eroded since the 1970s, greater vulnerabilities have produced dislocations in scattered industries, most prominently in textiles, steel and autos'(op. cit.). As a result of this ''vulnerability to trade competitors and its changing pattern of comparative advantage, American policy has become increasingly narrowly self-interested' (op. cit.). Outsourcing or offshoring are terms used to explain the migration of most of American service and technical jobs

Itizenship participation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Itizenship participation - Essay Example The research on Niger Delta of Nigeria is important because it shows how some of the multinational oil companies exploited Nigeria and robbed them of their riches. It also shows the irresponsible behaviour these oil companies in terms of corporate social responsibility and their indulgence in the interior political matters of Nigeria. The main idea of corporate social responsibility or CSR is to take up some responsibilities towards the society by the corporate world. In Nigeria the corporate communities always hide behind the Nigerian government when it comes to fulfil social responsibilities. Because of these oil companies most of the environment has been polluted. Many of the ethnic groups under the leadership of internationally known author Ken Saro-Wiwa protested oil production. With the help of Nigerian government the oil industries were able to suppress the protests, which is not in the best interests of the citizens of Nigeria. Instead of these hiccups its business as usual for the oil companies and Nigerian government because of the foreign exchange revenue. Since the citizens didn't come under the stakeholders list companies ignored their protests. CSR should always be a part of corporate strategies that shows social responsibilities are as important as profit maximisation. Practically implementing the above-mentioned tasks are very difficult. The destruction of human rights by both the parties can be complained to the UN that takes some time. The Nigerian government can only be requested because it's their internal matter and can only be forced to stop by developed countries like US and Japan or UN. The only approach can be through UN and make the Nigerian government realise that oil production should be done within best interests of their citizens and should impose restrictions that companies like Shell employ CSR activities effectively in the Niger Delta. Facilities The requirements for this project are easily available. The requirements are having a personal computer with Internet, if not working in an Internet is also permissible. Should be able write in forums or any blog sites about the atrocities done by the Nigerian government on their citizens and the role of oil companies. If possible use print media to reach most of the people. The best way to reach out the people is to have a website on Niger Delta and put all the details with photographs that describe the poor conditions of the people and environmental hazards caused by the oil companies. Budget 1. Including personal computer the cost will be $500. 2. If pc is excluded then the budget will be around $250-$350. The funds haven't been acquired yet. The sources of funding the project are expected to be through NGO's and some charitable

Masculinity, Mateship and Men's Lives Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Masculinity, Mateship and Men's Lives - Essay Example While maleness refers to the biological aspect, masculine refers to the fullest will of a man to live in a certain way and it’s a matter of choice to do so and not simply having a male body. It deals with the behaviour, mental quality and personality. It can also be the sexual behaviour for a man to desire heterosexual behaviour. The Mighty Boosh is a television series that tries to express masculinity in its broader perspective from the social, historical and cultural representations. It has brought about surreal representation of humour with the protagonists in the limelight to have failed in their character as men. In this case, they have been brought about to have fallen in their endeavours to become great boxers, musicians, novelists. Howard T.J Moon and Vince Noir have been brought about as Barrat and Fielding as the protagonists. They are a male couple with Barratt considering himself as very intelligent and a lover of jazz (Frank 2000). On the other hand, Vince has bee n portrayed as a lover electro and a staunch follower of fashion. His is contradiction of the character expected in the male gender. Men are not to known to follow fashion as such. This is seen as a feminine character. The show depicts the two protagonists as a couple, something that is socially and culturally backward. This shows that he is the married playing the part of the wife here. His way of handling himself and his adoration of Howard is in way very demining. Men are known to own the lead and not to be dragged into issues that primarily do not concern them of which Vince has completely denied to follow. Vince is deeply obsessed with his appearance. He takes too long to prepare himself or to leave the house. His time in resetting the hair and his concentration leaves a lot to be desired. As a matter of fact, he takes too much time in the performance of make upon himself just as the ladies do. The overall result is that he owns up to it that he has to do it to please the one h e is married to. To add insult to injury, he wears a combination of men’s attire and that of women. This allows him to be mistaken for a woman (Horrocks, 1994). His appearance does not so much differ from other women and the pretext form of Vince is much higher in favour of the weaker gender. This therefore renders him to be considered as the wife or the girlfriend of Howard or is otherwise the subject of the unwanted affection. In times when there arises a controversy, he is continuously abused or referred to in derogatory terms which are female in nature, like, bitch, tramp with a fringe and futuristic prostitute. The further brings in the confusion of identity. In the context of this, Vince is notably not annoyed by these as much as one would expect a normal man to react. In fact, he considers what he has done and apologizes or gives an excuse or flatters to show that these dint hit him hard on who he really pretends to be. In addition to this terms, his masculinity has be en undermined through the labels that he has been given like the ‘French duke’, ‘rock ponse’, ‘cockney bitch’, ‘trendy modern wanker’ and ‘electro ponse’ after his love for that electro music. It is arguably notable that all these labels are not just for a mere female, but for one who has involved herself into immorality and sex as well as to music which is mostly identified with clubs, crazy parties and the like. On his own account,

Ethics in the Engineering Profession Assignment

Ethics in the Engineering Profession - Assignment Example Thereafter, the consequences of the choices and decisions made in the situation are reviewed, and finally an analysis of the impact the code of ethics on the conduct of engineering professionals is discussed. A facility was needed to store water in a reservoir. The water to be stored was to be drawn from the reservoir by a separate system. The required system was expected to manage the level of water in the storage reservoir. The engineers in the situation used digital signals in which the PLC had two digital inputs, that is, empty reservoir and full reservoir. The digital output of the PLC is used to open and lock the inlet into the reservoir. When the two switches are off, the PLC opens the valve to let in more water. In the event that both switches are on, the PLC by design shuts the inlet to prevent overflow. Float switches were used to avert a situation in which any use of water opens the valve or activates, and subsequently deactivates the pump for a stint, making the system wear down quickly. The analog approach may use water and a valve, which can be adjusted. As for the PLC, a PID reaction loop could be used to regulate the opening of the valve. The engineers tasked with this duty were not getting on well and hence had challenges in communicating to one another; therefore, their ultimate goal lacked objectivity. The system they designed did not optimize the refill rates because one engineer failed to advise the counterpart that using both options of analog and digital system would be the best option to the problem. They ended up using the digital system. The two engineering professionals failed to effectively communicate; hence, performed the activity with dishonesty and without objectivity. The solution they offered the client will cause economic loss since the refill rates were not optimized even though it was possible for the two to ensure it happened. Clearly, the engineering code of ethics three was violated as objectivity and

Sociology Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Sociology - Assignment Example Impression management refers to both a conscious and unconscious process through which people influence perceptions other people about another person, an object, or an event by controlling information on social interaction. In the film, Angela influences Yaniv’s perception of his personality by sending him mp3 songs, which she took from performances of other people in YouTube. Megan and Abby make false claims with the motive of confusing Nev. It is lucid that the photos that Angela sends to Yaniv as those of Megan were from a friend of a friend. Angela finally confesses all the lies that she has told. How Max Weber’s concept of bureaucracy differs from most people’s negative perception of bureaucracy Bureaucracy is a way that organizes enforcement and administration execution of legal rules. The general opinion of bureaucracies is that they tend to focus entirely on their drawbacks and negative impacts on individual rights and efficiency. Many people view bureauc racy from a negative point of view and thus regard it as being inefficient. Max Weber on the other side contradicts with this ideas and views bureaucracy as tremendously effective measure that people should adopt. Max Weber describes bureaucracy in positive terms and considers it to be an efficient and more rational form of organization. Max argues that when one follows the seven principles, bureaucracy emerges as an exemplary form of governance that should be used in leadership. Max argues that officials must exercise their judgment and skills efficiently to serve the people who are of higher authority (Vogt and Williams, 19). They should ensure that they execute the tasks the authority assign them and sacrifice their personal judgment as a way of achieving the objectives that the authority intends. Criminological Theory The theory that I like best when it comes to explaining crime and criminal behavior is differential association and social learning. This is because it is unquesti onably true that one learns crime thorough associating with criminal definitions. When one associates with other people or definitions which approve criminal conduct, then they will tend to involve themselves in criminal behavior. In cases where one repeats criminal behavior, it becomes chronic, and this forms a form of social learning which will make one get used to the behavior. In cases where criminal subcultures are in existence, many individuals will learn how to commit crime and thus this will have the effect of accelerating the rate of crime in the society. This indicates that criminal activity is behavior that people learn from the others either through differential association, subcultures, or social learning. It is thus indispensable for people to curb crime through avoiding association with people who involve in criminal activities. Blame the poor or blame society Of the above two vies, I think that the one that best explains poverty is the view ``blame the society``. It describes poverty as the state of lacking material possessions or money. The society is to blame for the presence of poor people in the world. This is because it is the society that does not provide the necessary reproductive conditions that the poor need to liberate themselves (Vogt and Williams, 29). There are many people who dedicate many hours and are still poor. One should not hence blame the poor for their state
